Micro Nuclear Power Can Power 20,000 Homes

An SUV-size nuclear power generator developed at Los Alamos National Security could provide electricity for 20,000 homes and would need refueling only once every five to ten years. The generator would have no weapons-grade material and produce very little waste. Los Alamos-based Hyperion Power Generation already has a few hundred orders pending for the mini-reactors.

The Hyperion Power Module is five feet wide and can be carried by truck, train or ship where it would be buried underground. The reactor powers a steam turbine that could produce enough electricity for around 20,000 homes at 6 to 8 cents per kilowatt hour. The reactors would cost $25 million each and Hyperion is considering Lea County, New Mexico as one location for manufacturing. However, the company must still get regulatory approval which could take a few years.
